Behavioral and Emotional Disorders in Engineering Classroom

Behavioral and Emotional Disorders

Behavioral and Emotional Disorders is basically an umbrella term that involves several distinct diagnoses to fall. It includes Anxiety Disorder, Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, Manic-Depressive Disorder, and more. Also known as emotional disturbance and emotionally challenged.
According to a survey, it has been found that children with behavioral and emotional disorders exhibit one or more of these five characteristics:
  1. An inability to learn something that cannot be explained through sensory, intellectual, or health factors.
  2. Not able to build satisfactory interpersonal relationships with both the teachers and peers.
  3. Different types of feelings or behavior under normal situations which is inappropriate.
  4. A general pervasive mood of depression and unhappiness.
  5. A tendency to develop physical fears or symptoms related to personal problems.
Students diagnosed with emotional disorders often included in general education classrooms of top engineering colleges. However, severe cases usually require students to be taught in special education cluster units, self-contained programs. It further categorized into two parts, Psychiatric Disorders and Behavioral Disabilities.

Psychiatric Disorders

This disorder encompasses a wide range of conditions. Psychiatric disorders are defined as behavioral, mental, or perceptual patterns or anomalies which impair daily functioning and cause anxiety and distress in the engineering classrooms. For instance, it includes Anxiety Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or Psychotic Disorder.
Psychiatric disorders present a profound challenge for different reasons. On the one hand, teachers cannot treat these disorders, and schools are not hospitals. So, students struggling with these challenges can get their treatment and receive medication. Medication can affect people in different unexpected ways, as medical information is confidential.
Teachers of top private engineering colleges may be unaware of why students are acting the way they are. So, this makes it difficult to respond properly to certain behaviors. In addition, students who suffer from these conditions may be simply unable to meet academic and behavioral expectations. In such cases, students need to receive special education interventions and move into a special education classroom.
