How Engineers Can Help Reduce Unnecessary Plastic Pollution
Ways technologies are
helping beat plastic pollution
With the passage of time, the
dependence of humanity on plastic grows. It is lightweight, flexible,
inexpensive, and durable. It uses in everything from grocery bags to 3D printed
rocket nozzles. Plastic retains some of the most attractive qualities in any
material.
How long does it take for
plastics to biodegrade?
Petroleum-based plastic does not
biodegrade with the rest of the organic material mixed in with garbage.
Bacteria break down the organic waste into other useful compounds. However,
bacteria would not decompose plastic. Due to this, anyone can believe that plastic
will never biodegrade.
In fact, all the plastic that has
been produced since its invention is still around today. Almost everything we
touch is made of plastic. Humans have already produced 8.3 billion metric tons
of plastic in whole and production is set to increase.
New symbols for recycling
The challenge of recycling for the students of Engineering Colleges was
to design a symbol in 3D CAD that connects people to waste. However, the
multi-dimensional symbol illuminates a multi-dimensional problem that requires
multi-dimensional solutions. The symbol includes mounting holes in the back, so
it can be hung on a wall.
It reminds them that the waste is
a multi-dimensional problem and seeing and feeling a representation of the
trash created daily will help them to think more globally. Everyone needs to
forego immediate gratification if they ensure the long-term survival of the
Earth.
